Summer Meals Program
“For I was hungry, and you gave me something to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave me something to drink…Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did it to one of these brothers of Mine, even the least of these, you did it to Me.” - Matthew 25: 35, 40
Many families in Abilene are facing a summer they never expected. According to Feeding America, more than 50 million Americans have filed for unemployment since mid-March, and families are suddenly worried about their next meal. Providing access to summer meals for families in low-income areas should be an important priority for all of us.
As part of the Restore Abilene Initiative, Highland will once again partner with the Abilene Hunger Coalition and 11 other agencies to provide “Curbside Grab and Go” meals to the approximately 33,200 children throughout our city who are food insecure.
Did you know that in the Abilene Independent School District, 70% of children are eligible for the free/reduced breakfast and lunch program during the school year?
From March to May, AISD provided 105,500 curbside meals, and this effort continues by offering free breakfast and lunch at 12 sites until it ends on July 23. We invite you to partner with us to feed hungry children on Monday-Friday during the 3-week gap before school starts: July 27-31, August 3-7, and August 10-14. sites, June-July 23.

Why continue the Summer Meals program during the pandemic?
The many meals served by AISD March-May demonstrate many families with children have limited access to food and remain food insecure. Although the summer meal program will operate differently due to the COVID-19 crisis, the continuity of providing meals reassures families they can provide food for their children during the 3-week gap.
Please prayerfully consider how you can help us provide fresh, hot meals to hungry children for 15 days at the end of the summer.
