Abilene Hunger Coalition and Free Summer Meals Program
Kids Eat Free Summer Meal Dates: July 26-30 // August 2-6 // August 9-13
Who We Are: The Abilene Hunger Coalition exists to fight hunger in the Abilene and the Big Country Area. The Coalition, made up of various individuals, churches, civic organizations and nonprofit organizations supports hunger projects affecting the Abilene community and the Big Country area. The Free Summer Meals program is one of the Hunger Coalition’s initiatives to fight and find solutions to end hunger among children. At this time, the Coalition is not a separate 501C3 organization and operates under the umbrella of the Highland Food Pantry (Christian Ministries of Abilene).
Who We Serve: The Abilene Hunger Coalition serves anyone experiencing food insecurity. The Free Summer Meals Program began as a pilot program through the Highland Church in the Summer of 2019 to fill the 3-week gap after the Abilene Independent School District's Free and Reduced Summer Meals program ends at the end of July. The Free Summer Meals program continues for 3-weeks and ends once AISD begins the fall school year semester. The Free Summer Meals program is a privately-funded program serving children, adults, and their families in need of a free hot meal.
What We Do: The Abilene Hunger Coalition and the Highland Food Pantry on Walnut currently organizes and implements the Free Summer Meals program serving free hot lunch and/or breakfast meals at various sites throughout Abilene. The Coalition partners with over 11 to 14 host sites each summer to serve either curb-side or dine-in meals. The program depends on volunteers from the Highland Church and various community and civic groups such as the Kiwanis Club, and Hendrick Health.
Various ways to help during the Free Summer Meals Program include serving on the Highland Cooking Team, which prepares curbside meals for 6 host sites or volunteering to serve at one of Highland's meal host sites.
